Bad at Meditation? Excellent. You’ll Fit Right In.
You do not need to know Sanskrit.
You do not need to understand Hinduism.
You do not need to own white linen.
You do not need to sit cross-legged for 45 minutes with a beatific expression on your face while thinking about absolutely nothing.
(I have never quite mastered that last one myself. 😄)
And you certainly don't need to know what a Nine-Faced Durga might possibly have to do with your life.
Curiosity will do nicely.
I think we sometimes make spiritual practice far too intimidating.
We imagine everyone else knows the mantra, understands the ritual and is having profound mystical experiences while we're sitting there wondering whether we turned the oven off.
Welcome to being human.
Navaratri isn't about already knowing.
It's about experiencing.
For nine days we'll journey with the Nine Faces of Durga through stories, mantra, meditation, journalling, creativity and ritual.
You can listen.
Ask questions.
Write.
Draw.
Chant.
Laugh.
Get distracted.
Come back again.
Have an unexpected insight while making a cup of tea.
You may fall in love with a Goddess you'd never heard of three days earlier.
You may discover that one of these ancient stories has an uncanny resemblance to something happening in your life right now.
Or you may suddenly recognise a pesky old pattern and think:
“Oh bugger. THAT again.” 😂
That's when things get interesting.
Because you don't need to understand a Goddess intellectually for her story to become a mirror.
Something simply resonates.
A little door opens.
And you become curious about what's on the other side.
That's enough.
No previous experience required.
No spiritual gold stars awarded.
Just bring yourself, your curiosity and preferably your sense of humour.
The Goddesses can take it from there.
